This morning popular author Mark Manson posted to social media that perhaps the most underrated trait for a happy life is decisiveness. This made me think of many a challenge a person has faced in coaching situations, and how sometimes it was the decision to act that was holding them back even after careful planning.
There does appear to more options in life than ever before, in wealthier countries at least, which Manson notes can paralyze our decision making. According to Manson, you will lose more from indecision than making a bad decision and learning from your mistakes.
Of course, some bad decisions you cannot come back from. As with any generalized advice from a quote or held in a sentence, it can betray the complexities of life and I feel Manson would acknowledge this quickly. Taking a breath before acting, sleeping on something, and making a plan, have all shown their worth in all our lives.
So yes, decisiveness does indeed seem to have a place in people reaching their goals and learning so they can adapt. Life is short, time is precious. In a world where change is the only constant you can count on however, it is worth taking a pause to explore your thoughts on your own or to discuss them with a person you trust – be that a friend or a coach.
